Narendra Modi: India's Transformative Prime Minister
Childhood in Vadnagar
Narendra Modi was born on September 17, 1950, in Vadnagar, Bombay State (now Gujarat), to a lower-middle-class family of the Modh-Ghanchi community. His father Damodardas sold tea at the Vadnagar railway station, and young Narendra helped. Growing up in modest conditions with five siblings, he was known for his sharp memory and debating skills from childhood.
At age eight he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the Hindu nationalist volunteer organization that would shape his ideological foundations. He completed his BA in political science from Delhi University and later a Master's degree from Gujarat University.
Rise Through RSS and BJP
Modi spent much of his early adult life as a pracharak (full-time worker) for the RSS, traveling across India. In 1987 he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), quickly rising through the ranks as a gifted political organizer. He masterminded BJP's successful Gujarat election campaigns in the 1990s.
Chief Minister of Gujarat (2001–2014)
Modi served as Chief Minister of Gujarat for over 12 years, becoming one of India's longest-serving CMs. His tenure was marked by rapid industrial growth — Gujarat attracted enormous foreign investment and became one of India's most economically dynamic states. However, his time was also shadowed by the 2002 Gujarat riots, for which critics accused him of inaction, though courts found no prosecutable evidence against him personally.
Prime Minister of India
BJP's landslide 2014 victory swept Modi to power. His government launched flagship programs: Digital India, Make in India, Swachh Bharat (Clean India), Jan Dhan Yojana (financial inclusion), and the Goods and Services Tax reform. In 2019, BJP won an even larger majority. In 2024, Modi secured a historic third term, becoming only the second PM after Jawaharlal Nehru to do so.
Foreign Policy and Global Standing
Modi has repositioned India as a global power broker, courting relationships with the US, Russia, and the Arab world simultaneously. Under his leadership India hosted the G20 summit in 2023, launched the Chandrayaan-3 Moon mission, and became the world's most populous country. Love him or critique him, Modi remains one of the most consequential leaders of the 21st century.
