KP Sharma Oli: Nepal's Controversial Prime Minister
Early Life and Political Awakening
KP Sharma Oli was born on February 22, 1952, in Tehrathum, eastern Nepal. He comes from a modest hill family and joined communist political movements at a young age. As a teenager he was deeply influenced by the People's Movement against the Panchayat system. He was imprisoned for 14 years under the Panchayat government for his leftist activities, an experience that hardened his ideological convictions.
During imprisonment he married Radhika Shakya, a fellow activist, who remained his partner through decades of political struggle. He rose through the ranks of the CPN-UML (Communist Party of Nepal – Unified Marxist–Leninist).
Political Career and Rise to Power
Oli became a key figure in Nepali constitutional politics after the 1990 democratic movement. He served as Home Minister, Foreign Minister, and Deputy Prime Minister before becoming Prime Minister for the first time in 2015. His first term coincided with the devastating 2015 earthquake and India's controversial blockade of Nepal, during which Oli took a strongly nationalist stance, signing a trade deal with China to reduce Nepal's dependence on India.
Second and Third Terms
After the 2017 elections, Oli's left alliance won a two-thirds majority and he returned as Prime Minister in 2018. His second term was marked by an ambitious infrastructure agenda and a new political map of Nepal that controversially included Indian-administered territories — Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura — causing a diplomatic crisis with India.
His third term began in 2024 as part of another coalition arrangement, continuing his pattern of political survival through strategic alliances.
Health Challenges and Kidney Transplant
In 2008, Oli received a kidney transplant from his wife Radhika. The story of her selfless donation became one of the most touching tales in Nepali political history. His survival and return to the highest office is seen by supporters as evidence of extraordinary willpower.
Legacy
KP Oli is a deeply divisive figure: celebrated by nationalists for standing up to India and expanding ties with China; criticized by opponents for undermining democratic institutions, dissolving parliament, and concentrating power. His legacy in Nepali history remains actively debated.
