BTS: Seven Young Men Who Conquered the World
Origins at BigHit Entertainment
BTS was formed in Seoul, South Korea, by producer-songwriter Bang Si-hyuk (commonly known as "Bang PD") at BigHit Entertainment (now HYBE). The group debuted on June 13, 2013, with seven members: RM (Kim Nam-joon), Jin (Kim Seok-jin), Suga (Min Yoon-gi), J-Hope (Jung Ho-seok), Jimin (Park Jimin), V (Kim Tae-hyung), and Jungkook (Jeon Jung-kook). They debuted to modest attention in an industry dominated by established agencies like SM, YG, and JYP.
Building the ARMY
What separated BTS was their direct, unmediated relationship with fans. They used Twitter, V LIVE, and Weverse to communicate constantly — a radical approach in K-pop where artists were typically kept behind a mystique. Their fanbase, "ARMY" (Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth), grew into one of the most organized and powerful fandoms in music history, breaking streaming and sales records on demand.
Global Breakthrough
By 2017, BTS had cracked the US Billboard charts with "DNA" reaching the Hot 100. Their album "Love Yourself: Tear" (2018) debuted at number 1 on the Billboard 200 — the first K-pop album to do so. Their English-language single "Dynamite" (2020) debuted at number 1 on the Hot 100, making history as the first Korean act to debut at the top. "Butter" and "Permission to Dance" repeated this feat.
Cultural Ambassadors and UN Speech
RM delivered a landmark speech at the United Nations in 2018 as part of UNICEF's "Generation Unlimited" campaign, speaking about self-love and youth empowerment. In 2021, the group addressed the UN General Assembly as South Korea's Special Presidential Envoys for Future Generations and Culture.
Military Service and Future
Starting in 2022, BTS members began enlisting for South Korea's mandatory military service, pausing group activities until their expected full reunion around 2025. Their agency HYBE became one of the world's most valuable music companies, with a market cap exceeding $5 billion at its peak. BTS remains the most influential musical act of their generation, having proven that K-pop could achieve universal cultural resonance.
